The Exceptional Children's Home Manager

A Practical, Therapeutic Guide to Stronger Leadership

What makes an exceptional Registered Manager? It isn't having all the answers, creating endless paperwork or running a home where nothing ever goes wrong. It's about the culture you create, the relationships you build and how you lead when things become difficult.

This free FCC e-book explores the human side of leadership alongside the standards expected in children's residential care. It looks at therapeutic and child-centred leadership, culture, psychological safety, challenging poor practice, reflective learning, staff wellbeing, incidents, complaints and allegations, DoL and least-restrictive practice.

You'll also find practical examples, analogies and questions to reflect on — designed to make you think, not tell experienced managers how to do their jobs.

A CLEAR CONSULTANCY SERVICE FOR CHILDREN'S HOME PROVIDERS

Independent External Supervision for Registered Managers

Independent, reflective supervision commissioned directly by providers who want to give their Registered Managers additional support, constructive challenge and protected space to think.

Previous Registered Manager + Current Responsible Individual

Having sat in the Registered Manager's chair myself, I understand the pressures that come with the role — balancing the needs of children, leading staff teams, managing risk, challenging professionals and carrying the responsibility that comes with running a home.

My approach is therapeutically minded, relationship-led and grounded in curiosity rather than criticism. I'm passionate about helping managers look beyond behaviour, understand what may be sitting underneath it and create cultures where children and staff feel safe, understood and supported.

A big part of my supervision approach is building confidence within Registered Managers. Not creating dependency or giving managers all the answers, but helping them recognise their own strengths, trust their professional judgement and develop the confidence to make difficult decisions, challenge when needed and lead their teams with greater conviction.

MY APPROACH Curiosity, not criticism.

Reflective support that strengthens the manager rather than taking the manager's role away from them.

You don't always need someone to tell you how to manage your home. Sometimes you need someone outside the noise who understands the role, asks the right questions and helps you find confidence in your own thinking.

ABOUT FORSHAW CARE CONSULTANCY

Experience from inside children's residential care.

I'm Damon Forshaw, founder of Forshaw Care Consultancy, with over 11 years' experience within children's residential care.

Having worked directly with children, staff teams and managers before progressing into Registered Manager and Responsible Individual roles, I understand the realities of running a children's home — not just what good practice should look like on paper.

My approach is relationship-led, therapeutic and grounded in curiosity. I believe strong homes are built through strong relationships, confident leadership, honest reflection and cultures where people feel supported enough to learn, but accountable enough to maintain high standards.

My aim is simple: support the people caring for children to feel more confident in what they do, understand why they are doing it and create safer, warmer and more therapeutic homes.
